ABSTRACT:
The current centralized grid contains over 100 years of technology development and optimization in power generation, transmission and distribution and provides reliable energy at low cost.  In the past decade tremendous progress has been made to improve the efficiency and emissions profile of fossil based power generation. These technologies have included the successful development of economic viable renewable generation, the search for promising technologies toward carbon conversion and sequestration and more recently the trend of integrating generation on the distributed side of the grid. Recently policies and commitments in China have been directed toward developing a clean and sustainable energy strategy for the future. The strategy involves the continued use of clean coal, the addition of significant amount of renewables and the development of a distributed energy network that will eventually lead to the future Energy Internet. This presentation will provide an overview of the Distributed Energy Directorate at NICE which focuses on both systems development and materials research for energy conversion and storage. Our systems work is targeting new approaches in power controls design and algorithms for a highly distributed network of both power and chemical generation enabled by multi-layered cloud architecture, storage and rapid communication. On the materials side we are developing new low cost materials and cell designs for energy conversion and storage for both long and short duration. These new storage systems and controls platforms can be further refined and validated at our emerging NICE nano-grid which will optimized performance and cost using a real time economic model to meet electricity supply and demand.

Dr. John P. Lemmon, a State Specially Recruited Expert, is currently the Technology Platform Leader for Distributed Energy Technologies at the China Energy Group research center, National Institute of Clean and Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) located in Beijing. In this role Dr. Lemmon is leading in the development of new clean energy technologies that will transform the electricity business into a new highly distributed grid that combines both power and chemical generation and distribution. His platform is broadly focused across energy storage materials (High power Li-ion, Flow Batteries, CO2 Conversion), systems design, and controls that include new topologies and advanced algorithms supported by real time communication and data analysis toward the advent of the Energy Internet. Prior to his current position at NICE, Dr. Lemmon was a program director for the US Department of Energy (DOE) at Advanced Research Program Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). In his role at ARPA-E, Dr. Lemmon created and led over US $100M in transformational energy storage and distributed generation programs. He also developed a US $10M Tech to Market program to ascertain the value of energy storage across multiple applications. Dr. Lemmon received a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Oregon State University USA where his research focused on nano-structured materials and electrochemical properties for energy storage. He has authored 2 book chapters and over 100 publications in high level international journals that include a single author publication in Nature and co-author of several highly citied grid storage reviews. Dr. Lemmon has co-organized many symposiums, he has also been a prolific inventor with 120 patent applications and over 60 US granted patents that includes a 100 R&D award in Lithium ion battery technology.
